I love the colour of teal! Can you tell?
When I saw this gorgeous yarn from Bernat, I simply had to have it. It works up so perfectly and there’s no snagging or pilling. It’s absolutely the perfect yarn for these placemats.
I’ve created a lovely quick-and-easy free pattern for knitted placemats and coasters. As a bonus, if you need to know how to make a neat edge to a knitted piece, I’m gonna reveal how it’s done!
One 8.8oz ball of Bernat Maker Home Dec will give you two placemats and two coasters. Perfect! I love even numbers. And this is such a great exercise to learn those neat edges. So let’s get this party started!
- 3 skeins of Bernat Maker Home Dec (will give you 6 placemats and 6 coasters)
- 1 pair of 8mm (US 11) knitting needles
- CO – Cast on
- K – Knit
- P – Purl
- Sl st – Slip stitch
- St(s) – Stitch(es)
To create a neat, finished edge, we will do the following:
- First stitch of the row will always be slipped purlwise (with the yarn in front)
- Last stitch of the row will always be knitted by passing the right needle through the back of the last stitch on the left needle, then knitting it.
CO 50 sts.
Row 1: Sl 1 st purlwise, *(K1, P1), repeat from * to last st, K1 through back of st.
Row 2: Sl 1 st purlwise, *(P1, K1), repeat from * to last st, K1 through back of st. (these 2 rows form a moss stitch pattern)
Row 3: As row 1
Row 4: As row 2
Row 5: As row 1
Row 6: Sl 1 st purlwise, (P1, K1) twice, K to last 5 sts, (P1, K1)twice, K1 through back of st.
Row 7: Sl 1 st purlwise, (K1, P1) twice, P to last 5 sts, (K1, P1) twice, K1 through back of st.
Repeat rows 6 and 7 for a total of 45 rows.
